Michael Birch designs the most imaginative and creative scarves I've ever seen. Each scarf collages an assortment of unique images added for "style, narrative, and others to induce a movement, feeling or even a specific sound." The goal behind each design is to create "visual movement" with "opposing themes and contrasting meaning." Indeed Birch's elaborate wording is the best way to describe his designs. Inspired by music, poetry, and art (among other influences), Birch chooses various themes for his works in order to "demand a conversation with the viewer." The British designer was educated at the Chelsea College of Art and having worked with designers such as Zandra Rhodes, Birch formed a solid foundation for his chosen career path. Truly words cannot describe these prints: each one tells its own story, and it's only really possible to follow along in person.

I can definitely see Birch as one of today's young up-and-coming designers. His designs are proof of his unmistakeable talent; each design is carried out with evident thought, care, and passion. I can't wait to see more from Birch, and I hope you'll feel the same.

I'm Haute for Couture

As we grieve about winter, aching for warmer weather, magic is occurring in the fashion world. Couture has been prancing down Parisian runways, lighting up the lives of the fashion-obsessed across the globe. I always look forward to Spring/Summer runway shows for the generally upbeat vibe that radiates from each look. (And after all, the S/S shows are often the most colorful.) Couture fashion week, however, is always one of the most exciting occasions. This is when creativity comes alive, because these looks are not made to sell, rather they exemplify the artistic side of fashion rather than emphasizing commercialism. Though I love RTW shows, they truly do not compare to those of haute couture. My only regret is that more designers do not create couture looks; there are so many RTW designers that contain a wonderful mindset for dreaming up such creations.
Below I have featured the most colorful looks from the Spring 2012 couture season.

Alexis Mabille

Inspired by a photograph of model Lisa Fonssagrives on a beach, Alexis Mabille created a collection suited to the idea of the "science of color." Certainly the focus was on solids, each look presenting a new - but solitary - bright. Though the oversized roses situated on the top of each model's head serve as quite a distraction, once the eye finally drifts downwards it is evident that each garment is wonderfully crafted. Beautifully fitted silhouettes and extravagant detailing (especially in the light green look) make for a collection that only slightly verges on crazy, mostly sitting on the line of elegant. It is the headgear and painted faces that slide the collection over towards absurd; the clothing is thoughtfully designed, with most of the looks ending up as winners. (Some looks fall a bit short, such as a metallic neon pink shift, which could have been better conceived.) Over all, though one could argue that the details from chin up were necessary, it's these details that really make a couture show what it is. As viewers, we look for the little (or big) things that separate RTW from couture, the creative decisions that individualize designers and show off their artistic talent. Alexis Mabille certainly lived up to the standard that haute couture sets.

Giambattista Valli

Although the majority of Giambattista Valli's show consisted of blacks and whites, pops of color appeared in a set of pinkish-red gowns. Though as Girl Loves Color I'm probably biased, I would have to say that these looks stole the show. Color never fails to stand out and in haute couture shows, this is exactly what I look for. Not to mention that these gowns are perfectly appropriate with Valentine's Day rapidly approaching. Yes, the color palette is reminiscent of Valentine's Day, but the dresses embody elegance and pure femininity personified by truly genius designs by Valli. The two solid gowns are simple yet undeniably classy with certain nods of luxury. The two printed gowns are more on the extravagant side yet still contain a classic air. Just by glancing at these four looks, it is immediately evident that Valli is a talented designer who knows how to craftily shape fabric into mind-blowingly beautiful results.

Despite the nice use of color for the Atelier Versace line, I wasn't that impressed with the brief collection that Donatella Versace showed. The designs were loyal to the brand's signature, but in the end the looks seemed to fall a bit short of where they should have been. It's almost as if Donatella was tired out from the H&M collaboration earlier this year, too worn out to put the necessary effort into her couture show. Regardless, the designs were still nice; I just have high standards for couture shows. A textured yellow dress with shoulder cut-outs was definitely a winner, along with a flaming orange one-shoulder minidress that I predict will make an appearance on the red carpet sometime this year. After all, Atelier Versace is becoming a favorite for the red carpet, and it looks like Donatella wanted to create some more stunners for her celebrity following.

Over all, there wasn't a large amount of color present on the couture runway shows. Color had its moment of greatness in the spotlight, but it seems like now a lot of designers are letting the excitement fade, opting for neutrals and pastels. There's nothing wrong with this, of course, but I wish more designers would consistently take advantage of the color wheel.

But the fall 2012 shows are right around the corner, and we'll see what happens to color next.

I'm proud to announce that, as of yesterday, Girl Loves Color is officially one year old! It's been an amazing year. I feel like my blog and I have both grown so much in these 12 months, and I'm amazed at how time has flown.
I can truly say that Girl Loves Color changed my life. Blogging opens up so many doors, and I feel immersed in the fashion world, instead of peering in from the outside. The blog is also a mechanism for improvement; I greatly feel that my writing and photography skills have improved immensely. Blogging has helped me explore my passions and it's a way to freely express myself.
Of course, I would never forget to mention my lovely readers. I love each and every one of you who reads my blog, even if it's just a post or two. It's incredible to think that there are fashion-lovers all over the world reading my posts. And it's even more wonderful to see the comments I receive, knowing that my readers love engaging with my posts.

Girl Loves Color was truly an experiment. I love writing, and I love fashion. I always imagined taking advantage of these two interests of mine in a future career, but when I heard about the rising fad of blogging, I figured, why not start now? It would be a good chance to try something new out and see if this was really the career path I wanted to venture down.
One year later, the experiment continues, and I love it.

Let It Snow

For me, weather has always been the element to ruin an outfit. Whether rain or snow, extreme heat or extreme cold, the climate has always in part dictated what I wear. It's a habit of mine to check the weather forecast every morning before school because certain shoes cannot be worn in the rain and certain sweaters should not be worn if the temperature is above freezing.
I should say now that I am not a fan of snow. It looks pretty when it has just fallen, a clean white blanket masking the dullness of cement sidewalks. But within a matter of hours, the serenity of this untouched layer disappears into a mess of gray slush that is unpleasant in every way. This is mostly because I live in New York City, where there is traffic and a multitude of people walking here and there, so I can't speak for everyone. But when it comes to fashion choices during this time, I think most can relate.
I do not do snow boots. Yes, I have a pair of Uggs. (I'm a teenager, after all.) Yes, I wear them when the snow is unbearable. But, really, there's nothing fun about snow boots. Luckily, this season there is a variety of boots to choose from that won't be such a pain to wear. Wondering how to wear yours? Girl Loves Color has the answer.

Flower Child

Being in the Dominican Republic, one sees a lot more bright colors than in New York City. While New York City is known for citizens who wear way too much black, the city also suffers from cold winters. The Dominican Republic, which does not experience this type of climate and has probably never received snow, is a tropical country. There are different varieties of palm trees everywhere and bright purple and pink flowers sprinkled around the resort I am residing in. It's simply a more colorful place.
This is why I wasn't surprised to find a lot of color and bright patterns when I went to a nearby shopping center this afternoon. There were only a few shops with native lines (the rest were American stores), but these shops were so fun for a girl like me. I saw a large variety of swimwear in bold patterns and sheer caftans and such for swim cover-ups, also decorated with colorful prints. The everyday clothing was not the best quality, but it was interesting to see the different styles and patterns used in another country's fashions. Though I tried some things on, no, I did not buy anything. (Remember my 2012 Fashion Resolution to be a more careful shopper?) Instead, I was inspired to write this post.
Anyway, this brings us to the topic of today's post. I have always been a lover of floral prints. No matter where I go, I never fail to be enticed by the florals on the racks of clothing stores. Seeing so many flowers here and so many floral prints while shopping, I was interested in scouring the brands I know for some great florals that are more accessible. Below, you will find some brief features of brands known for their fantastic floral prints. After all, it may be winter where I live, but I still like to brighten things up!

Erdem Morialioglu cites "color, optimism, and oddities" as his design signatures. Born in Canada, the designer studied at the Royal College of Art. His brand has received numerous awards, including the BFC/Vogue Designer Fashion Fund 2010.

Mary Katrantzou

Mary Katrantzou is one of the lastest It designers to hit the scene, but she is certainly making her mark. Known throughout the industry for her fabulous and one-of-a-kind juxtapositions of print, the designer freely uses color and composes unique, architectural silhouettes for only the most perfect creations. The theme for this collection was man vs. nature, so naturally florals were everywhere.

Known for its great selection of indie designers and in-demand supply of vintage, this shopping website is perfect for the woman who hates wearing what everyone else has. The picks are stylish, affordable, and even the new pieces have a fun, vintage feel. The floral pieces offered by ModCloth are stunning and quite classy.

Caribbean Nights

Having arrived in the Dominican Republic for a relaxing weekend, I enjoyed seeing all the lush greenery and a clear blue sky. It was a refreshing view after so many gloomy, semi-wintry days in New York. Maybe it's something about being away from home, but at these times I'm always inspired to be more adventurous. This, of course, can be applied to my love for fashion as well. I jumped at the chance to put together a nice outfit when I heard that tonight's dinner would be relatively fancy. Luckily, I had packed plenty of options in case the occasion arose.

2012 is going to be the year for mixing prints. For a great effect, try mixing patterns that use bright colors. Just make sure that the pieces share at least one color, otherwise the patterns will clash. Putting together different patterns may cause skepticism, but often it's best to try things on in order to tell whether or not prints will mix well.

Neon for Dummies

It is a well-known fact in fashion that many people shy away from color. Neon, however, is quite another story. If there were to be a color scale, pastel would be about a four, bright blues and greens would be about a six or seven, and neons would be a ten. I'm sure most will agree with me when I say that neon is the trickiest type of color to master. It has to do with the brightness of neon shades, which is astounding. It's easy to be intimidated by neon.
There's no need to worry about your fear any longer. If you love neon or just want to give it a go, this is the blog post for you.

A little:

Thakoon tank top, 7 For All Mankind jeans, Modcloth gold bracelet, Chan Luu wrap bracelet, Dieppa Restrepo oxfords.

Start subtle with a neon detail. Elegant shoes call for contrast with cuffed jeans, which will also highlight the shoes. The best part is the fun neon green that will peek out.

In the middle:

La Garconne sweater, Nina Ricci skirt, Danielle Stevens necklace, Yves Saint Laurent pumps.

Tone down a neon pink skirt with an oversized sweater in a neutral color worn on top. Keep accessorizing minimal and add red heels to complement - not distract from - the pink.

A lot:

Christopher Kane dress, Miss Selfridge ring, Christian Louboutin heels.

The spotlight's on you with a neon dress. Neutrals just won't do when it comes to shoes, so opt heels in a similar color family but that aren't too close to the original neon shade. There should be little to no accessorizing; I added an interesting gold ring to prevent bareness but without causing distraction.

Yumi Kim

Yesterday I decided to explore the Lower East Side of New York City, since I've never really been there. The area has become pretty hip recently, with lots of fashion boutiques hosting emerging designers and cute restaurants and cafes with a sleek, chic vibe. Of course, the main attraction for me was the shopping. There were several boutiques I wanted to visit in the area as well as some new stores that I discovered throughout my hours of wandering. It was a lot of fun to be able to experience a new neighborhood, as each section of New York City feels completely different.
In this blog post, you'll hear about one of the boutiques that I visited yesterday, which was Yumi Kim. I had heard of the designer before because I had browsed sample sales for the brand as well as visited boutiques that had stocked their clothing, but I never knew about the boutique. Thus it was a delight to stumble upon such a place.
Yumi Kim is a line launched in 2004 that is designed by Kim Phan inspired by vintage prints and silhouettes. The line has a sweet, feminine aesthetic, mainly comprising of silky dresses and blouses. Vibrant color is one of the main aspects of the clothing, making the brand a wonderful choice for a Girl Loves Color feature.

The Yumi Kim store (located at 105 Stanton Street) has a modern, girly air. The prints and colors on the rack give the store life. The roominess and the aforementioned details make the store pleasant to browse.

Most of the racks of clothing in the store look like this: bright, colorful, and patterned. Just my style!

The store has lovely printed pillows, which I'm pretty sure are for sale. The lighting came out weird in this photo, but you get the point.

Cute decorations give the store such a lovely feeling.

One of the good things about Yumi Kim is that the prices are fairly reasonably for such good quality garments.

Tropical Storm

Topshop's latest collection, South Pacific, ingeniously combines colorful prints consisting of island, floral, and oriental motifs. The collection consists of an amazing variety of patterned bombers, jeans and hotpants, t-shirts, and two fantastic carry-alls. While winter is known for thick black knits and layers upon layers, now's the perfect time to inject some tropical style into your everyday ensembles. It'll certainly spice things up and add a little bit of pizzazz to those boring winter staples. Another plus is the classic Topshop price tags: right in the middle! (In other words, not cheap but not too pricey.)

Not much can be found out about British line David David. In fact, David Saunders's label doesn't have much of a website at all. However, with a bit of searching, one can stumble upon the lovely David David Tumblr blog, which consists mainly of posts briefly noting new David David creations, news about the brand, and a myriad of posts about things that inspire and intrigue Saunders.
David David is a fitting topic for Girl Loves Color for the obvious reason. The simple silhouettes of the line's clothing are decorated with bright graphics, often consisting of unusual geometrics. This signature is employed with accessories as well, such as scarves and umbrellas. The t-shirts in particular are often hand-painted, making each top a one-of-a-kind artifact that is tangible proof of a designer's passion and care for his craft. Some of the t-shirts have even been exhibited, bestowing the status of art piece on to the humble garment. Certainly David David is a unique venture - one that I hope to hear of in the many years to come.

2012 Fashion Resolutions

Though some of us have already reached 2012, many of us are anxiously awaiting the New Year. This turning point represents a fresh start. I'm sure you're familiar with the idea of making New Year's Resolutions; it's a wonderful tradition that supports and motivates people to make new goals and stick to them and to make important changes in their lives. It's difficult to remember the list you made throughout the year, but these ideas will always be lurking in the back of your mind, pushing you to be a better and happier person.
I, like most others, will be making my own set of resolutions tonight, but in the meantime I thought I would also compile a list of Fashion Resolutions - the title is self-explanatory.

1. I will work hard on Girl Loves Color, improving my blogging skills and making the site even better. I want to continue blogging regularly throughout 2012, even more often than I have in 2011. I will continue to be innovative and true to myself on my blog.

2. I will limit my shopping ventures to items I really need and will wear often. I will save splurges for special occasions and for the rare item that really calls to me. I will continue to colorize my wardrobe.

3. I will put together my outfits with care, but I will not second-guess my instincts when walking out of the house. I will be confident in my clothing.

4. I will regularly go through my collection of garments, accessories, and shoes and determine what I rarely wear. I will donate these items or give them to friends.

5. I will be innovative in the use of my fashion-related possessions, wearing things in different ways to maximize my options, so I don't have to buy so many new things.

6. I will continue to add dashes of color into every outfit, and I will encourage others to do the same.

Today I was browsing through the Stylecaster website, a lovely community where you can find insightful articles related to fashion, beauty, and lifestyle, as well as upload your outfits and ask for style advice. The site also has a number of fashion editorials created exclusively by and for Stylecaster. It was this section that I was most interested in; the editorials are beautifully done. Of course, I was most inspired by the brightness of "The Color Collector," an editorial that is quite true to its name. I thought today I would do a simple blog post as the holiday season is winding down, just a little something to keep you inspired. I hope you enjoy.

Three Ways: The Little Black Dress

The holiday season has been upon us for a while, so I thought it would only be appropriate to do a helpful holiday-themed blog post. As I'm writing these words, I'm assuming that you have been invited to a number of holiday parties. Whether for Christmas, Hanukkah, New Year's, or whatever else you may be celebrating, I imagine that styling outfits for this variety of events can be stressful. If you're like me, you'll also want to add color to your respective ensembles, which can be a difficult task. Don't worry, I'm here to help. The solution is simple; every woman owns a little black dress (LBD). Work off of that, and you can create a stunning outfit that'll wow every pair of eyes in the room.
This is a different kind of three ways post, but I hope it proves just as useful.

Baby, It's Cold Outside

I was on the search for a winter coat for a long time. This is a struggle for petites like me, who often face the issues of coat sizing. Many of the coats I have tried on in my journey are way too long: they hit at right above the knee, which wouldn't be a problem except for the fact that it diminishes my height further by cutting off my legs. Nor do I want a coat that is so cropped it can barely keep my warm; this obviously defeats the purpose (though this form of outerwear is quite stylish and flattering on me). I also need a coat that is fitted without being too small to accommodate layers of knitwear. As you can see, I have many guidelines. I'm quite picky when it comes to outerwear (unless, of course, said outerwear is a fantastic leather jacket). I'm proud to say that I finally found the perfect specimen: a toggle coat that hits me a little above mid-thigh. The coat is lined with a beautiful blue-green plaid and consists of good quality materials. Only one problem: the coat is black.
Black? But, Maya, you love color! That's why you named your blog "Girl Loves Color." You're such a hypocrite!
Well, I usually get quite annoyed when I have to don my winter coat for an adventure outside, as often said coat is a puffy marshmallow of down. This coat is different; I enjoy wearing it. Yet I still felt incomplete when I put on my jeans and black combat boots, covering any trace of color with my black coat. I would go outside and not quite feel like myself.

The dilemma was resolved when I visited the fantastic consignment store Tokio 7 in the East Village on Sunday. The store sells high-end brands such as Marc Jacobs, Prada, Gucci, Chanel, and Louis Vuitton. Though some fakes have been spotted at the store (be careful if you go!), the selection is overall quite fabulous. The shop has a fantastic selection of Louboutin shoes, tons of cashmere sweaters, and a variety of unique yet wearable designer dresses. Most appropriate for this weather, however, is the huge amount of outerwear available (both mens' and womens'). I was casually browsing this section when I stumbled upon a hidden gem: a bright purple DVF coat exactly my size. The price was probably 40-60% off of what it must have been originally. And the coat was brand new - the tags were still on and the pockets still sewn closed. I couldn't believe it when I tried it on and the coat fit me perfectly. I knew I had to get it.
Today was my first day taking my colorful new coat out for a spin. I was happy in a way that no piece of outerwear had ever made me feel before. I felt like Girl Loves Color again.

Frieda and Nellie

Frieda and Nellie is a jewelry line founded and designed by Stacy Herzog and Sarah Reid. The pieces are inspired by a friendship bracelet foundation, reminiscent of those Herzog and Reid used to make back in their days at summer camp as children. The duo, who met while working in the fashion industry in NYC, began to create colorful friendship bracelets by hand. Working off this idea, they began to add vintage pieces from their grandmothers' jewelry collections (the two of whom the line was named after) to create a contrast of new and old. Today the brand works off of the mantra "Reuse, repurpose, reinvent." When a reporter from Women's Wear Daily stopped the two on the street to compliment their unusual accessories, things took off after they were featured in the newspaper as up-and-coming designers. Herzog and Reid consequently quit their day jobs to focus on their new project, scouring flea markets and vintage shops for pieces that reminded them of their grandmothers' treasures. Today, Frieda and Nellie pieces continue to be handmade in New York City, making each piece a one-of-a-kind labor of love.

Inspired by: Dazed & Confused

I've long heard of the magazine Dazed & Confused, a British publication that has created its own subculture consisting of independent and influential articles and editorials inspired by only the most intriguing forms of artistry, fashion, and music. The magazine could truly be referred to as a collection of the next big things, representing these rising artists in an honest, down-to-earth manner. Those featured in the magazine are truly passionate about their work, which portrays a rawness and creativity that is rarely seen in today's culture that is dominated by the top names. Similarly, the editorials are original with a focus on beautiful, artistic images that complement the featured fashions. The two editorials in the December 2011 issue of Dazed are what urged me to buy the issue, in fact, entitled "Graffiti Dreams" and "Quirked Out." As with many, I'm sure, the editorials are the highlight of a magazine that contains fashion-related work, and one can often interpret the vibe of a publication from its editorials. Dazed's editorials speak to an audience that is interested in getting down to the core of what these images are supposed to be: inspiring, and certainly many of the photographs have stayed with me long after I put the issue away. Because a fashion editorial is not just about the fashion; it is a work of art in its own right, not just a mechanism used to sell us consumers these fashions.
The editorials contained in Dazed's December 2011 issue were unlike many of the editorials I've seen before. The images feel raw and edgy, high fashion depicted as art rather than objects with a hefty price tag that make women whip out their wallets. Though the editorials are reminiscent of many in NYLON in that the vibe is directly opposite of mainstream, they are still quite different than any other editorials. Thus I decided to let the latter editorial, "Quirked Out," guide me for this blog post.

Sam Leutton and Jenny Postle recently debuted brand-new line Leutton Postle for the SS'12 season. Comprising of innovative knitwear techniques intermixed with gorgeous hues, the combination of texture and color creates spectacular designs with movement and presence.
After spending six months in China working with German knitwear company Stoll (whose New York City factory I visited a month ago under the influence of the Missoni family), Sam Leutton returned to work with Postle, a long-time friend of hers; the two had attended Central Saint Martins together. (Jenny Postle had been thrown into the spotlight when her Central Saint Martins MA show was snatched up by famous London fashion destination Browns Focus.)
The Leutton Postle line is best summed up with a quote from their website, which reads: "Their design approach freely embraces color, unusual surface texture and rich pattern to create beautifully offbeat knits for women."The placement of brights against a rich neutral background creates a beautiful and intriguing contrast, as does the mix of textures.
"It's quite 'now' in that it's playful with layers of texture," Leutton described in Dazed and Confused's December 2011 issue, "Who else is doing mental colours?"

Chelsea Market's Holiday Pop-Up Vintage Sale

Firstly, my apologies for the lack of posting this week. I've had exams in all my classes, which has made me overwhelmingly busy. However, I'm pleased to say that yesterday I was able to check out the Holiday Pop-Up Vintage Sale at Chelsea Market in NYC's Meatpacking District during a break from my studies.
Vintage is a curious topic. Often I find that vintage stores are hit-or-miss for me; while sometimes I go to a regular spot and find an amazing deal, other times I find that the collection of wares is entirely uninteresting to me. This is an ongoing problem that can be discouraging for many shoppers like me who enjoy vintage but don't always have the patience for it. I'm generally the kind of person who wants to go to a vintage store, find one or two cool things, go to another vintage store, find another thing. This rarely occurs. I would say that 9 times out of 10 I am unsuccessful in my hunt for vintage garments or accessories that catch my eye. Sure enough I have acquired a decent amount of vintage products over the past year or two, in which my interest in fashion has blossomed, but the ratio of vintage to new is quite unbalanced. Why is it that vintage is such a tricky thing? It's because times change. Trends always come back in style, but there are some fashions that are stuck in their respective time periods. Take for example the psychedelic colors and neon hues popularized in the 60s-80s. I'm obviously a huge fan of color, but some of the wild patterns and color combinations found in these eras are pretty unwearable in this day and age. Nonetheless, I always maintain a motivation to look for vintage items to add to my closet. The reason why vintage is so appealing to fashionistas is because these things are one-of-a-kind; it is rare to find a brand-new design that could come close to those that are vintage. And anyone who is skilled at putting outfits together knows that contrast is key: that between old and new never fails to create a timelessly chic ensemble. For these reasons I was excited to visit the Pop-Up Vintage Sale.

Feeling Blue

It's been a long time since I did a post focused on a specific hue (for those who haven't seen it, I also have a post about emerald green) so I decided that it was time.

Blue is my favorite color, and I am particularly fascinated with shades such as the ultramarine above, which could also be identified as royal blue or indigo. If you are a color fanatic like I am, you probably enjoy targeting specific colors that you wish to add to your wardrobe, going from shade to shade. Blue is a popular color, but I find ultramarine to be such an exotic shade, lending an unusual vibe to a broad color spectrum often synonymous with jeans. If you love blue as much as I do, ultramarine is a great hue to add to your collection of clothing and accessories. It's elegant and sophisticated, and it would be difficult to find a color that doesn't pair well with such a color.

Bright Thinkers

For most people, going to school isn't the ideal choice for how to spend one's day. I know that a lot of youths - especially girls - feel pressured to look a certain way or dress a certain way during school hours, according to the standards set by those considered "cool." It can be hard to wear something different to school, like colored jeans or a really great pair of heels, and I know that often I go to school not feeling quite like myself. Of course, I try to dress true to my personality, but I know I'm not the only one who has that little voice that tells you not to wear something because it's "too weird" or "no one will like it." In reality, it doesn't matter what anyone else thinks of what you wear: you're the one who matters. But school would be a very different place if everyone was able to stick to that thought all the time. It's rare to find a person who isn't influenced by others' opinions.

Long story short, this is often why there is a lack of color in the wintertime at school. Most girls this time of year wear jeans (blue or black), boots (brown or black), and a sweater (black or white). This doesn't create a lot of variety, and to make things harder, it can be difficult to find apparel that is both comfortable and suitable for the climate.

I have an easy solution for us students, no matter how old you are: invest in a colorful bag for carrying around your books. An unusual tote or backpack can instantly reset your mood at the beginning of a new day; I've found that carrying a more cheerful looking bag makes me happier! (You may remember my post on the bag that I carry for school.) It's also an easy - and subtle - way to add color to your outfit in the gloomy wintertime. What more could you ask for? Neon is a tricky hue to master. Known as "highlighter shades," neons are the brightest of the bright, which is probably why they're so difficult to style. In this Three Ways post, I'll show you how to master neon in one of its basic forms: the tank top.

Color My Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving celebrates the things that we are thankful for in our lives, as well as the gift of coming together as a family or a group of friends.
Today I was thinking about what I would wear to my Thanksgiving celebration, and I'm sure many other fashion-inclined girls and boys are wondering the same thing. Here are three suggestions for appropriate outfits that also incorporate dashes of color:

Why this outfit works: A neon pink bag complements the light pink stripes in the dress, so the color isn't from out of nowhere. Red tights and brown boots give an autumnal vibe to the ensemble, while jewelry is kept to a minimum for practical reasons. A gold chain necklace is simple but elegant.

Kongo for Hermès

Kongo is a graffiti artist who has traveled around the world to create his art. He co-founded the Festival International de Graffiti, in which artists worldwide are invited to tag the Bagnolet streets in the Parisian suburbs.

In one of the most incredible and innovative collaborations this year, Kongo moves from concrete to silk to work with renowned fashion house Hermès on a collection of scarves. Following in the footsteps of such partnerships as Takashi Murakami with Marc Jacobs for Louis Vuitton, today's brands known worldwide are pioneering a new appreciation for different mediums of artwork. Certainly graffiti artists seem to be having a growing influence; one example is the film Exit Through the Gift Shop, a visual portrayal that attempted to follow well-known street artist Banksy.

Certainly Kongo's work for Hermès is bound to set a new trend. The difference between the two art forms make it a surprising collaboration, but one that works well. Hermès has a long history as a luxury brand, catering to posh clientele. On the other hand, street artists don't generally come from wealthy families, and graffiti often covers abandoned or impoverished areas. (Of course, there are exceptions.) This difference in backgrounds results in an amazing - although surprising - set of products. The resulting scarves are enlivened by the contrast between the toughness of graffiti and the light femininity of a silk scarf. The prints may be hard to decode - after a long store, it was evident that the Hermès name was written four times in bold graffiti font - but they are unique and beautiful to look at. I can't remember ever seeing an accessory like this.

For your holiday season, consider a Kongo for Hermès scarf. Not only will you be adding a healthy dose of color to your life, which I strongly encourage, but your support for such a collaboration will only encourage more. I believe in the important of supporting artists such as Kongo, who work on different mediums than those considered the norm, because they are the future of art.

ASOS Marketplace

ASOS Marketplace is a fairly new shopping destination that can be found on the regular ASOS site. The difference is that while ASOS sells contemporary labels, ASOS Marketplace is a mecca for indie and emerging designers in addition to a fabulous assortment of vintage garments and accessories. Items are sorted into "boutiques" that are owned by users who are just everyday people - anyone can create their own store in the Marketplace. Many users model their own wares, giving the site a very personal vibe, like you're buying from a little store that's a town's best-kept secret or even a designer himself/herself. Online shopping has removed this touch that is so satisfying when you buy a product, but ASOS Marketplace is striving to hold on to that feeling, combined with the ease of purchasing something online.
ASOS is a full-on community, with the option to follow your favorite designers and boutiques, a blog for each boutique, and an ASOS Marketplace blog that features new boutiques and rising trends in the Marketplace. Plus, what could be better than supporting designers that are just starting out and collectors selling their own wares?

Three Ways: Colorful Statement Necklace

The name says it all: statement necklaces sure do make a statement. That's why many women shy away from them. It's difficult to wear something so bold in public, and even more so when the aforementioned item is extremely colorful. Another thing to bear in mind is that these accessories are quite costly; the majority are handmade, and a handful of them are even one-of-a-kind. However, statement necklaces are unusual and extremely beautiful; if you can afford one, it can be worth the investment no matter how often you wear it.
I've written this post to show you how to incorporate a colorful statement necklace into your outfits. I hope these suggestions are helpful to those who already own similar pieces or inspiring to those who yearn for them. The example I'm using is pretty over-the-top, but you can find subtler and less expensive necklaces at the end of the post.

Pixie Market

Pixie Market is a great online shopping destination for unique garments that are both wearable and affordable. The contemporary designs offered by a variety of brands, such as One Teaspoon and Cheap Monday, are right on trend and cater to all sorts of stylish girls. The store's aesthetic is hip and edgy, as is its customer. Yet every garment has the capability of slipping into your closet as if it had always been there; you'll wonder why you hadn't bought this sooner.
Pixie Market is one of the few sites that I love to browse just for fun. I find exactly what I'm looking for but with a twist: clothes that I have trouble finding anywhere else. The variety of brands sold on the site is fantastic, and these brands are difficult to find, despite the rise of online shopping in the past few years. There are lesser-known brands alongside contemporary favorites, such as Jeffrey Campbell and Mink Pink.
Your best bet here are the clothes that don't have a designer listed (the designs unique to Pixie Market). They are the most affordable, but also maintain that artsy aesthetic that all of the other brands here have. Not every piece is amazing, but you'll always find that one stand-out garment that you know you just have to have.

And of course, how could I forget to mention color? This site always has a good variety of colorful pieces despite the season. There are shocks of bright color next to more subtle hues, so there's something for everyone. You'll find color blocking, solids, and unusual prints and patterns.

Brazilian designer Carlos Sobral is influenced by his native country when it comes to making his pieces, which include jewelry, handbags, and home decor. Sobral began creating jewelry in the 1960s, when he discovered a love of working with unusual recycled materials. Inspired by the Hippie movement occurring at the time, Sobral made his pieces by hand using materials such as metal corroded in acid. He sold his work at craft fairs and other events in Rio de Janeiro, the city in which he was born. At the Hippie Fair in Ipanema, Sobral discovered resin, the use of which he would soon become known for. He realized all of the opportunities that resin presented and took advantage of them.
Sobral opened up a small workshop where he created his colorful designs. After quickly becoming successful in the Brazilian fashion world, Sobral set off for Paris, where the determined designer eventually captured the interest of the fashion elite.
Sobral has won numerous awards for his incredible designs, such as four Etoile de Mode awards at the BIJORHCA designer jewelry show in Paris, as well as the Best in Show award for his famed "Pop" collection.
Besides creating fantastic pieces and having collaborated with Karl Lagerfeld on the line Lagerfeld by SOBRAL, Sobral's company is also eco-friendly. Sobral uses recycled materials in his resin collections, in addition to the use of recycled computer circuit boards in his "Flash Gordon" collection. The packaging is 100% oxy-biodegradeable and the 160 SOBRAL employees receive meals, medical care, and retirement plans, all of which are rare employee benefits in Brazil.

These pieces are a fun way to add color to any outfit or room. The designs are extraordinary beautiful, eye-catching, and one-of-a-kind. It's rare to find this kind of artistry nowadays, and SOBRAL prices are fairly reasonable, with much of the jewelry costing $150 or less. Not bad for such craftsmanship and thoughtfulness, in my opinion. Forever a Missoni Fan

On Thursday I was fortunate enough to have the opportunity to visit the Missoni store on Madison Avenue along with some fellow fashion enthusiasts. We were accompanied by Luca and Judy Missoni, the son of the original founders of the brand - Ottavio and Rosita Missoni - and his wife, respectively. I learned a lot about the company and how Missoni garments are made, and I greatly enjoyed the chance to look at the merchandise of one of my favorite designer brands.

Missoni, as I'm sure you know, is renowned for its traditional knitwear, most famously the zig-zag pattern. The garments use a wonderful variety of colors and the quality of the fabrics is practically unbeatable.
In the beginning, the simplest movement to make on the knitting machine was that of the zig-zag, which later became a Missoni signature, but as time went on the level of creativity increased. Missoni patterns are created by moving the fabric as it is knit and by pressing the fabric in certain points for a lace-like effect. This led to many twists on the classic zig-zag. Missoni often creates basic straight knits that are fully fashioned, meaning that machines create shapes that are then linked together, so no sewing or cutting is required. There is also the most expensive technique of knit and wear, when a garment is made in one piece.
Missoni has always been innovative and unafraid of experimentation. Missoni was one of the first, if not the first, to use nylon in the mid-70s to create reversible clothing lined with weather-resistant materials, a first in the fashion industry. Missoni uses space dying, when the yarn is dipped in color, to achieve its unique palettes and patterns. For the look of glitter, laminated materials are knit into the fabric.
Missoni is timeless, always looking forward but always staying faithful to the original foundation of the brand. When I asked Mr. Missoni how the look of Missoni has evolved over time, his response was that of the approach to design. Experimentation "kept a kind of edge," and the brand adapted to evolving technologies. The ideas that worked are kept and adapted, and experimentation is solely for the curiosity rather than the need. Although the fashion industry is known to be fast-paced, Mr. Missoni explained that there is no need for the brand to expand quickly, but instead they must go slow.

Inspired by Graffiti

If graffiti were a currency, New York City would be one of the wealthiest locations in the world. It's difficult to spend a day in the city without encountering some sort of this street art - though the "art" term is debatable in some cases - whether it be on the side of a building or on the windows of a subway car. In many cases, graffiti consists of messily scrawled signatures, written in the stereotypical font style of graffiti artists. However, there are also examples of beautiful designs that are so imaginative that they cause me to stop and stare in amazement at the beautiful scene depicted on the wall in front of me.
Now, I'm sure you're wondering what this has to do with fashion, or perhaps you have the slightest idea after reading the title of this post. If you've read this far, you can probably guess that graffiti is a big source of inspiration for me. It is one of the most creative art forms that exists today, because there is so much freedom in its creation, despite the fact that it's technically illegal (ironic, right?). Graffiti has been so integrated into city life that New Yorkers are used to it, but occasionally we stumble upon that one example that takes our breath away.
The following photographs were shot by me in Williamsburg, Brooklyn on the day of the Vintage Crawl. For this post, I've used these images of graffiti/street art as references for fashion ensembles: my preferred art form. After all, it's slightly easier to assemble a fantastic outfit than spray paint someone's building.

The first thing one notices when looking at this graffiti is the use of the color of green, which is the most prominent detail in the piece. Thus green is the highlight of my outfit, yet to create a monochrome ensemble one has to pair together different shades. In my case, I have a leafy green sweater with a texture that is somewhat reminiscent of the plant in the photograph, and dark green corduroys. I added the velvet blazer for sophistication, as well as for the purpose of creating a unique palette of textures. The fringe booties only add to this mixture, also giving the outfit an earthy and bohemian feel that stays true to the vibe of the image. Sculptural gold jewelry represents the architectural lines in the graffiti, which are piled together into layers of art, much like my more subtle translation using a combination of two geometric statement necklaces. The rings add femininity and finish off the outfit.

This outfit was centered around the idea of color bursting out of the darkness, like the rainbow flooding out of the gray trees in the street art. To stay true to this inspiration, I chose a neutral dress with elegant draping to represent the trees and their texture. The tights represent the fun and imaginative quality of the wall, and pop out from underneath the neutral dress. The blue heels are a portrayal of the sky and lend elegance to the outfit, contrasting the quirky and cheerful legwear. This bangle is so unusual and creative, just like the graffiti.

This outfit was based on the contrast between feminine colors and the toughness of skulls, representing the jawbone of the graffiti in the photograph. The dress is colorful, and the drapes represent the "dripping" detail in the image, while the structure of the dress symbolizes how the art is contained by the shape of the object it is painted on. Neutral leggings with an abstract skull pattern add a subtle touch of toughness, which is only added on to by the fierce Nicholas Kirkwood booties. More color is added with neon bracelets, to help portray the fun craziness of this piece of street art.

Teen Vogue Fashion U

This weekend I attended Teen Vogue's Fashion University program, a weekend of fun classes and shopping events with other fashion-obsessed girls and boys. The program is by application only, and thousands apply. I was lucky enough to be accepted into this program that boasts attendees from all over the world; some countries that were represented this year were Canada, Colombia, Mexico, and Poland.

The weekend started off with an H&M shopping event to kick off the weekend. The event featured a live musical performance by British band Brother, as well as a DJ and a variety of snacks and drinks to sample while we browsed the collection.
The next day I woke up bright and early for a day full of seminars, arriving at the Hudson Theater in New York City's midtown for 8:45. The lobby of the theater was full of stalls set up by some of the event's sponsors. We received a LeSportSac tote full of goodies upon check-in, which included a glossy copy of Teen Vogue's November issue among many other things. I was approached with pamphlets and slips to fill out to enter giveaways as soon as I walked away from the check-in table; it was overwhelming, in addition to the swarms of fashionable teenagers and young adults that made walking around a difficult task. There was a Makeup For Ever lash bar, where we received limited edition false eyelashes designed exclusively for the event by Teen Vogue's beauty and health director Eva Chen. Essie was giving away free bottles of nail polish, with a variety of beautiful shades available. Trollbeads was hosting a giveaway for a ring and Clean & Clear was giving away a basket of products. LeSportSac was selling merchandise. Guess was handing out t-shirts designed to benefit charity by a TVFU attendee. And there was so much more that I can't even remember!
We entered the theater and heard Michael Kors, who was the keynote speaker. It was lovely to hear him, and he bestowed a lot of advice upon his adoring audience. "Once you're bitten by the fashion bug," he declared, "you've got to read it all." I've certainly been bitten.
Next, off to the seminars! I attended classes with Teen Vogue's creative director, Katia Kuethe, who explained how she runs cover shoots, in particular the Alexa Chung shoot for Teen Vogue's November issue, as well as how she does the graphics for the cover. I then went to hear the Proenza Schouler boys, who were interviewed by editor-in-chief of Teen Vogue Amy Astley. They spoke about how they attained such success, starting with stories from their Parsons days and finishing off with answering questions from the audience. I had lunch with new friends and then returned to the Teen Vogue offices, where I heard Lauren Berger, the "Intern Queen," give advice about the right way to go about getting an internship. It was so helpful and was probably my favorite class that I attended because I gained so much knowledge. I then heard Linda Fargo speak, who is the Senior Vice President of New York City luxury department store Bergdorf Goodman. Afterwards, I returned to the Hudson Theater for a panel of the Teen Vogue editors: Amy Astley, Gloria Baume, Jane Keltner de Valle, Shiona Turini, Danielle Nussbaum, and Andrew Bevan. I greatly enjoyed hearing the editors speak about their experiences and was very inspired, especially by Shiona's dazzling Miu Miu heels!

The day was completed by a soiree at Topshop in Soho, where a section of the second floor was reserved especially for the TVFU students. There were desserts, a candy bar, drinks, and free gifts with purchase. I had fun browsing the merchandise of my favorite store, as well as receiving a dramatic makeover from a Topshop makeup artist.
On Sunday (today), I arrived at the Hudson Theater at 9:00 for a panel led by Simone Oliver, Senior Fashion & Styles Web Producer for the New York Times, on Fashion in the Digital Age, which featured the following speakers: Hillary Kerr and Katherine Power of WhoWhatWear.com; Rich Tong from Tumblr; Aliza Licht, Senior Vice President of Global Communications for Donna Karan International; and Susan Koger, founder of Modcloth. Graduation followed, where we received diplomas and had our photographs taken individually to finish off the eventful weekend.

To add some color to this post, I'd like to show you what I wore to the Sunday events of TVFU:

Overall, I'm so glad I attended this event. I learned a lot and I met some wonderful people, who are just as intrigued by fashion as I am. Because after all, as Michael Kors said, "no one else understands."

I've been talking a lot about transitions: making your summer staples equally wearable in colder weather. It's already halfway through October, meaning that it's time to start thinking more about those normal fall and winter purchases. Sure, it's fun to shop the sales and buy discounted warm-weather merchandise, but sometimes it's better to use your money on something more practical. That's why I've already started pulling out the sweaters, and why you should too! I've had a lot of fun browsing through summer discounts - let's be honest here - but when I go shopping it's sweaters that I focus on. Comfortable, cozy, and warm, these garments are perfect for the temperatures we're all awaiting.
Below is my guide to the season's most colorful knits, along with tips on stylish ways to wear them. I personally selected each of these items after browsing through a variety of websites, trying to find quality items that are also reasonably affordable and in a varied color palette. Please enjoy.

When inspiration seems to fail me, all roads lead to Tumblr. An endless portfolio of beautiful images, Tumblr never ceases to motivate me to be creative and imaginative. For this blog post, I have once again turned to Tumblr to create a series of colorful outfits based on various photographs and pieces of art found on the site. Though I wish to give credit to the artists who rightfully deserve it, unfortunately Tumblr rarely notes the mastermind behind these lovely works. All I can say is that I found each of these images in Tumblr, and every one is beautiful in its own right.

This outfit has a lot going on, just like the painting that inspired it. I captured the vibe of the painting with a combination of sophistication and fun (the clutch, and partly the shoes). The shoes, however, represent a twist on classic sophistication, as the painting doesn't personify the classic definition of sophisticated, rather representing a more abstract view on the word. The spastic feel is embodied by the interesting pattern of this Matthew Williamson dress, yet the silhouette of the dress keeps things classy. After all, no matter how crazy a painting gets, it's generally contained within a frame.

I was going for more of an editorial feel here. Pastel tears are represented by the outfit, the green blouse layered under the blue one. These amazing heels represented the eyes, thickly coated with mascara, and their toughness. This fierce, almost scary vibe given off by the eyes is represented in the jewelry as well, which conveys strength and glamour at the same time. I like this contrast between hard and soft, which is also represented in the artwork with the relationship between the colorful streams of tears and the black holes that are eyes. However, the glossy red lips feel elegant, so I attempted to portray this as well in my outfit.

With this outfit, I wanted to portray the beauty and elegance of a sunset, which is what this piece of art reminded me of. I was inspired by the palette of a sunset with this beautiful dress. Both the silhouette of the cardigan and the dress are draped, which represents the waves depicted in the image, as do the lines of the architectural shoes. The satchel adds a classic feel and fits in with the color palette; after all, a sunset is a daily occurrence.

Three Ways: Bright Bag

Now that it's becoming chillier outside, it's becoming increasingly difficult to find colorful clothing in stores. Not only is black stereotypically a New York color, but as the temperature goes down neutrals always seem to be in fashion. For some reason, it just takes so much effort to find a neon sweater or colorful pants that are warm enough to prevent my legs from turning pink.
My solution? A colorful bag! This accessory is rarely seasonal; it can generally be used all-year round, making a colorful bag practical and worth the money, while it also adds pizzazz to any outfit in a way that nothing else can.
Many women seem to shy away from color when it comes to handbags, opting for black or brown in most cases. I can see why these colors are popular choices, but every female I know owns more than one bag. Why not make one of those a colorful one? Though sometimes pricier than their neutral counterparts, colorful bags will stand out from the crowd and will be sure to garner many oohs and aahs - just what any fashionista wants!
Here, I'll show you three different ways to style a bright bag for fall.

Why this outfit works: This outfit is comprised of neutrals, so the green bag stands out. The color palette of the scarf, however, helps incorporate the green into the ensemble. These shoes add some more excitement; I actually own this exact pair, and they have to be one of my favorite possessions.
A sweater and jeans create a cozy combination, but when the jeans are rolled up and paired with flat shoes the outfit feels suitable for fall, which is still a transition time.

Why this outfit works: This outfit would be perfect for eating at a nice restaurant. Jeans feel casual, but a blazer and a somewhat fancy top jazz up the look, as do fierce platform booties. The green satchel adds a fun pop of color, while a fluorescent toned cuff adds an artsy touch.

Why this outfit works: The green bag is simply adding color to a palette of mostly neutrals. A blue shirtdress has a sweet mix of masculine and feminine, while combat boots add a contrasting touch of toughness. An oversize cardigan adds warmth as do black tights, and these bracelets add just the right touch of glam.

Megan Park is an Australian designer who is known for her combination of hand embroidery and traditional technique with today's cuts, shapes, and fabrics. She studied fashion design at RMIT and worked as a textile designer in Melbourne after leaving college. In 1997, Park launched her eponymous label in London, where she was working for a respected agency with clients such as Givenchy and Kenzo. The collection first consisted of evening bags and scarves, but has now grown to include womenswear, clothing for girls, accessories, and various home furnishings.

Fabrics are hand-dyed and assembled by hand and embroidery is also done by hand, making each Megan Park product a special purchase.

Color on the Runway: Haider Ackermann

Haider Ackermann's SS'12 collection was filled with luxe garments. The looks had a somewhat Oriental feel, referenced in the sheen of the fabric and the occasional patterns. Though there were many neutral ensembles in the collection, color played a huge role.

The silhouettes in this collection were masterfully designed. Suits in grape purple and raspberry hues were tailored beautifully and it will be interesting to see how these outfits are incorporated into the working world - or elsewhere. Sensuous draping was wonderfully done, adding grace and femininity to more structured looks. Color blocking was well done here: the aforementioned purple suit was paired with blue shoes and my favorite look of the collection was an aqua top matched with bright green pants and royal purple shoes.

Overall, a spectacular collection that felt fresh and innovative. I loved each and every design, even the ones lacking in the color department!

Color on the Runway: Tsumori Chisato

Ever since I first discovered Tsumori Chisato in the springtime, I have been slightly obsessed with the brand's charming prints, gorgeous colors, and cute three-dimensional details.

This collection felt more like resort-wear rather than something fit for spring and seemed to lack a specific theme, but I liked the clothing nonetheless. The inspirations, however, were clear: there were both tropical and tribal elements, as well as some sporty flourishes, such as an orange and blue zip-up jacket with palm tree detailing. Palm trees were a big winner in the collection, seen on t-shirts and skirts with three-dimensional fronds, a cute touch.

Chisato's collection contained the signature charm of the brand, but tried something new with simpler silhouettes. But the fun is still there, luckily, because that has to be my favorite aspect of Chisato's designs. Maybe these clothes aren't the most wearable ones in the world, but they sure are fun.

Color on the Runway: Salvatore Ferragamo

The Spring 2012 collection for Salvatore Ferragamo felt like a tropical paradise, full of bright colors and floral prints reminiscent of Hawaiian vacation garb. Though some of the brightest hues may have caused the garments they colored to come off as a bit cheesy, the majority of the looks had an elegant sophistication despite the fun prints and colors. Like the Missoni collection reviewed previously, light blue and fuchsia were big in this collection and created stunning results. The clothes were beautifully feminine and well-designed, but it was questionable whether the collection was true to the Ferragamo aesthetic. Massimiliano Giornetti has certainly turned the house around, as bright colors like the ones seen in the Spring 2012 looks aren't common in Ferragamo collections. However, a large percentage of the looks maintained the signature classy quality of Ferragamo clothing, whereas some were lost in translation. Overall, I rather liked the collection and enjoyed seeing something different; it was fresh and exciting.

Color on the Runway: Missoni

The classic Missoni vibe was certainly present in the S/S 2012 collection for the brand, evident in the knitwear and textures, but not without a twist. The collection strayed away from traditional Missoni patterns, instead opting for bold colors and the occasional print, with a dash of Missoni-esque stripes here and there. The hues were definitely brighter than usual for the fashion house, although the collection also included maroon garments that were more subdued. Fringe and ruffles were two popular details in the collection, seen in every look that walked down the runway. The fringe necklaces worked perfectly, but when placed in other areas of the garment it just looked like there was too much going on. Colorful ruffles added sweetness to the almost edgy quality of the collection, but one-shoulder ruffled dresses seemed to be literal takes on stereotypical salsa costumes.

Though there were definitely steps that could have been taken to improve this collection, overall I loved it, as I always seem to love Missoni's designs. The winning idea here was the ingenious combination of fuchsia and yellow, an unconventional pairing that looked absolutely gorgeous on the runway. I'm glad that Angela Missoni tried something new with this collection, unafraid to take a step away from the house's long-time signature. It will be interesting to see how the Missoni customer translates these pieces into her life. These garments will be good buys, as I can picture them being worn for years to come.

Color on the Runway: Alberta Ferretti

Despite the fact that Alberta Ferretti's show started and ended with neutrals, there was plenty of color sandwiched in the middle. Inspired by "the poetry and mystery" of the wild world, Ferretti created colorful jungle-esque prints with an African vibe and solid colored ensembles that used a technique called intaglio to duplicate tribal tattoos. Certainly the sharp silhouettes and architectural lines give the collection an urban appeal, but the colors spice up plain silhouettes. I can see evidence of Ferretti's inspiration in the collection, but the show felt like it had two parts - or rather consisted of two different collections: the urban, sophisticated, feminine looks and those jungle print, safari-inspired looks. I wasn't a huge fan of the second part, but the solid colored looks that went down the runway were simply beautiful. I loved each and every hue.

Color on the Runway: Mary Katrantzou

Mary Katrantzou could be called the Queen of Prints, a name which describes her style in a nutshell. But there is much more to her collections than just prints, as you will soon see. For her Spring 2012 collection, Katrantzou stayed true to her aesthetic but wasn't afraid to take risks in order to let her signature improve and evolve.

The collection had a beautiful mix of neons splashed together and subdued pastels. Prints were mixed together ingeniously, rather than a garment focusing solely on one specific print. However, the looks felt perfect for spring with subtler floral and watercolor-inspired prints. The structured silhouettes that Katrantzou presents were still here, yet this time they were more subdued, putting the focus on the chaotic yet controlled mix of color and print spread across each garment. These combinations were masterfully done; none clashed, rather the different elements working together to create a beautiful end result.

My favorite parts of the collection, overall, were the neon minidresses at the end of the show and the addition of bright lipstick, which was a fun addition.

Color on the Runway: Michael van der Ham

True to his style, Michael van der Ham has presented a beautiful collection full of interesting juxtapositions of fabric, color, and pattern. Although these unique combinations are the designer's signature, this time around he has managed to push himself even further. The designs are bolder and have a more optimistic vibe. Along with the wild looks that he is known for, van der Ham added ensembles that are more practical for the everyday woman. Of course, they're only for the everyday woman who isn't afraid of bright colors and prints. These looks have the same feeling as that of the rest of the collection, yet prints and colors are mixed via separates, rather than being combined into one garment. I love this evolution from the designer's Spring/Summer 2011 collection; this collection proves that Michael van der Ham has become a stronger designer, more confident in his skills and having a greater ability to refine his designs to make them look sharper and more professional. Past designs certainly showed promise, and now here is the result we have been waiting for.

Color on the Runway: Basso & Brooke

New York Fashion Week has ended, but that means that London Fashion Week has begun.

Basso & Brooke is a label from the UK focused around digitally designed prints, for which they are famous. Designers Bruno Basso and Christopher Brooke have won numerous awards, been featured in the annual "Vogue List," and have collaborated with high profile brands such as Converse and Coca-Cola. In addition, Michelle Obama has worn their clothing, making them one of the first UK designers to be worn by the First Lady. Basso & Brooke is sold worldwide.

This collection certainly did not stray from the regular aesthetic of Basso & Brooke. Silhouettes were relatively simple, so as to not distract from the wild and colorful prints. These prints were exotic and so interesting to look at; these are the kinds of garments that every time you look at them you find something new. All in all, it's difficult to describe such a collection, because it's the kind of thing one has to see for himself/herself.

Color on the Runway: Rodarte

Rodarte's Spring 2012 runway show certainly gave off a spring-like air. Pastels combined with sensual draping created feminine ensembles that had the grace characteristic of the season. Of course, it wouldn't be Rodarte without a little twist. Light colors were also found on tougher, architecturally structured pieces. Florals with an Eastern vibe added a fairy-tale like quality to many of the looks. Though the collection thus far sounds quite girly, it without a doubt contains darker side. Heavy black eye makeup and dark strappy shoes added an edgy twist.

Overall, the use of color here was spectacular. The color palette was just right and color was able to add to each look without distracting the viewer from the beautiful details of each design. Though the uniting theme of the entire collection was unclear to me, it is certain that the Mulleavy sisters know how to create beautiful garments.

Color on the Runway: Creatures of the Wind

The Creatures of the Wind Spring 2012 collection was classic and feminine, but with a twist. Shift dresses and knee-length skirts came in bold hues and prints and the pairing of socks with sandals added an offbeat touch that was just right.

Some of the looks seem quite tricky to pull off in real life, but the majority of the collection is quite wearable for the everyday woman. They're pieces that women will actually want to purchase. One stand out piece was a blazer with both colorful floral jacquard and black lace over silver lamé, combined in a manner that looked practically effortless. The best look of the collection by far, however, was a shimmery green top paired with a vibrant blue skirt; paired with neon green sandals and lime green socks, the look was polished yet intriguing.

Color was the standout detail in this collection, turning interesting silhouettes and prints into extraordinary garments. The shades were rich and glorious, certainly not for the faint of heart.

Color on the Runway: Ruffian

Brian Wolk and Claude Morais of Ruffian were inspired by the jockey jerseys in Saratoga Springs, a location known for horse racing, where they spent most of the summer. The inspiration is evident in black and white sleeves and diagonal stripes sprawled across colorful jackets.

Color was the standout detail of the collection. Each garment had a silky, luxurious feel and was well-tailored, but the pieces would have been boring if not for the wonderful additions of color. Color blocking was a big part of the show, one of the best looks being a yellow and blue chiffon dress. Silky jackets and blazers also stood out; they're perfect for spring, especially in such bold hues.

My favorite aspect of the show, however, was the colorful strappy heels added to each ensemble. They only added to the looks, the colors of the shoes jazzing up black and white outfits seen at the beginning and end of the show.

Overall, a great show.

Color on the Runway: Nicole Miller

Nicole Miller's Spring 2012 show could be characterized by the term athletic chic. Straying away from her signature party dresses, Miller's collection was inspired by "the speed of wheels in motion...the momentum of a skateboard shredding through the air." Though certainly an unexpected influence, Miller was able to do the sports world justice. Some ensembles may have been too literal, but the majority were wonderfully executed, sporty with an injection of colorful femininity.
Come spring, it will be interesting to see how Miller's customer incorporates these pieces into her wardrobe. Though some pieces are highly wearable - like a pink, blue, and green knee-length printed skirt - others are trickier, like the multicolored patchwork print pants.
Overall, the standout piece of the show? A bright, sky blue trench!

Color on the Runway: Peter Som

I'm so happy that New York Fashion Week has finally arrived! Technology nowadays is quite miraculous in respect to exclusive events like Fashion Week. Seeing shows in person is definitely preferred, but in this era young fashionistas like myself can see pictures - or even see a live stream - of shows online. Luckily enough for those of us who don't attend Fashion Week (yet), we can follow along easily, photographs often being posted the same day as the runway show itself.
What does this mean for you, my reader? You can expect an extraordinary amount of Color on the Runway posts in the coming week. Get excited!

Now, on with the show. (Cute pun, right?)

Peter Som's Spring 2012 collection is characterized by an abundance of florals, bright colors, and crisply tailored pieces that are both fun and feminine, yet maintain a level of edgy sophistication. The looks have a cheerful, sunny vibe that will certainly put the wearer - or the observer - in a springtime mindset. The collection is perfect for the confident woman, bold yet chic, who requires an impeccably curated wardrobe. There were dresses appropriate for work or for play, and some that could go either way; there were sharp blazers and pantsuits in bright hues; and there was a selection of lightweight coats perfect for those rainy spring days.
Som stayed true to his feminine aesthetic, but was able to successfully present us with a set of looks that are fresh and innovative. Without straying away from his signature sophistication, he added a little more personality into this collection, which really brought it to life.

Krystof Strozyna

Krystof Strozyna studied at Central Saint Martins, graduating in 2007. His graduate collection was displayed in Harrods as one of the winners of Harrods Design Awards. He also received the New Generation/Topshop sponsorship for a collection shown at London Fashion Week. The press has responded positively to Krystof's designs under his eponymous label, and he has been featured in editorials in Vogue UK, Vogue Russia, Wonderland, Elle US, and Elle UK, among others.

Krystof's combination of impeccably tailored silhouettes and color makes for a variety of interesting and sophisticated garments that can be easily worn by the everyday woman. His silhouettes are on the simple side, but draped detailing and bold colors and prints make up for it. Color is used as an accent here, to add interest to each piece without being the main attraction. This usage makes it easy for the modern woman who is afraid of standing out to add color into her wardrobe.

Transition Time

In this post, I'm going to show you how to wear your summer pieces when the weather gets colder. This is always a good skill to have, as the transition from summer to autumn can be a difficult one (hence why the September issue of magazines is a big deal). It can very simple to get use out of your colorful summer garb even when it isn't warm out, but sometimes you just need a little help.

You have: a colorful summer dress.

IRO biker jacket, American Eagle dress, Falke tights, Blowfish heeled booties, H&M key necklace, Chan Luu wrap bracelet.

Add edginess to a feminine dress with a biker jacket and lace-up boots. You can never go wrong with neutrals; the rest of the outfit is comprised of neutrals so the focus is on the dress.

You have: a bright tank top.

Topshop blazer, shorts, and pumps; Madewell tank top, Falke tights, Warehouse belt, Elizabeth and James ring.

Throw a blazer on top of a summer tank top for warmth. Instead of wearing jeans or trousers, try black shorts for an unexpected touch (these shorts are velvet). Tights are a must: black ones enable you to wear a colorful pair of shoes as well. Wear rings instead of necklaces, which would draw the eyes away from the beautiful color of the top. A belt is optional.

You have: a floral skirt.

Tibi sweater, H&M skirt, Topshop boots, Modcloth tights, Forever 21 necklace, Dannijo ring.

Wearing a sweater on top of a printed skirt creates a cozy but chic combination. Choose one color from the pattern of the skirt to inspire your choice of legwear. Boots are a good choice for footwear. A necklace is mandatory, but any kind will do. Try an interesting ring that goes with your tights or skirt.

Hopefully this post will help you make the transition into fall!

A word of advice: take advantage of the summer sales. Summer staples can be equally versatile in colder weather as they are in warmer weather. Also, if you love color like I do, summer sales are great places to stock up on bright pieces, since it can be hard to find colorful garments when the weather becomes colder.

Three Ways: Colorful Pumps

Today I thought I would do another Three Ways post, but this time with a colorful pair of shoes.

Topshop heels - $160

Old Navy faux-leather jacket, Rare dress, Modekungen clutch, Amrita Singh bracelet.

Why this outfit works: Spice up a little black dress with colorful accents. Because black is a neutral, it is simple to add color. Any color shoe would work here. Because the green clutch has blue undertones, it goes well with the blue accessories. A tough jacket contrasts the femininity of the rest of the ensemble.

Mark blazer, Topshop dress, 3.1 Phillip Lim satchel, Kate Spade necklace.

Why this outfit works: Heels like these add a nice touch of personality and color to a neutral, relatively conservative outfit for the workplace.

Splendid cardigan, Topshop tank top, H&M bag, Forever 21 pendant necklace.

Why this outfit works: This is a subtle example of color blocking (the red cardigan and the blue heels). The colors don't clash because they are separated by a pair of ordinary jeans, which serve as a neutral. The top is good in this outfit because its colors are in the same family as the cardigan, so the two go well together. The bag is a neutral. This outfit has a lot going on, so it requires the bare minimum of jewelry. I added a subtle gold pendant necklace.

Shoes are a great mechanism with which to add color to an outfit. To experiment with colorful shoes, try buying a pair in a conventional silhouette, so the color is the main attraction. Topshop and ASOS have some great options. Try it out!
